Degrees

Directly after graduating from high school or after professional training or a year abroad, you usually start a degree programme that leads to a first academic degree. This can be a Bachelor's degree, a teaching degree with a state examination or an artistic degree with an artistic qualification.

With a Bachelor's degree, you then have the opportunity to gain further qualifications with a Master's degree. Bachelor's and Master's degrees belong together as a "study system".

Bachelor's degree programmes / combined Bachelor's degree

A Bachelor's degree program usually lasts six to eight semesters and concludes with a Bachelor's certificate. With this degree, you can start your career and the certificate is recognized on the international job market. Alternatively, you can gain further qualifications as part of a Master's degree course.

Depending on the degree programme, you either study one subject or a main/major subject and a minor subject. The latter are so-called combination bachelor's degrees.

Master's degree programmes

If you are aiming for a career in science or would like to deepen your knowledge even further, you can study for a Master's degree after completing your Bachelor's degree. This course usually lasts two to four semesters. Some of our Master's degree programmes are designed in such a way that they can be studied while working (continuing education Master's courses).
Each Master's degree programme has its own profile. Whether a Bachelor's degree is suitable for this profile is checked by the examination board of the respective degree programme on the basis of the profile criteria.

Teacher training course (first state examination)

Teacher training courses conclude with the first state examination for the respective teaching profession (elementary school, secondary school, grammar school). The final examination, finals are held by the Hessian Teaching Staff Academy. This is followed by the traineeship and the second state examination.

The vocational and business education degree programmes are also geared towards a teaching career. However, they do not conclude with a state examination. Students receive a Bachelor's certificate from the University of Kassel. For these degree programmes, there are also corresponding Master's degree courses for further qualification.

Artistic degree programmes (final examination, finals/diploma)

The Fine Arts and Visual Communication degree programmes lead to an artistic degree. The Product Design degree programme leads to a degree in design. A successful entrance examination is required for these degree programmes. Particularly outstanding students in the Fine Arts and Visual Communication degree programmes can complete a master's degree.

Combined study / dual study program

With this type of course, you gain practical experience in a company at the same time as studying. It is therefore not a special degree, but a special type of study.

Requirements for studying

To be able to study, you first need a degree certificate that entitles you to study at auniversity (university entrance qualification): Allgemeine Hochschulreife, Fachgebundene Hochschulreife, Fachhochschulreife, Meisterprüfung or comparable qualification (studying without Abitur).

Forms of university entrance qualification

A good overview of the various university entrance qualifications can be found on the information page of the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art.

Studying without a high school diploma

There are several routes to a place at university for those with professional qualifications.

Additional prerequisites/requirements

In addition to the university entrance qualification, some degree programmes require further prerequisites: These can be

  • Passed entrance examinations (artistic degree programmes, music, sports),
  • language certificates for a foreign language or
  • internships.
  • For Master's degree programs, the Bachelor's degree should match the profile of the Master's program.
You can find out whether there are such special requirements for your desired degree course on the respective degree course page.

Number of study places = NC or no NC

There are enough study places!

There are sufficient places available for many degree programs. All prospective students receive a place. All you have to do is enrol on time. When you enrol (matriculate), you usually register with us for a course of study, pay a semester fee and start studying at the beginning of the semester.

There are only a limited number of study places

An admission restriction means that only a certain number of places are available on a degree program. How high this number is depends on the available teaching staff and facilities. As a rule, you must therefore apply for a study place. If more applicants apply than the number of places available, a selection process will take place. If you are accepted, you still have to "enrol".

You can find out whether your desired degree course is subject to admission restrictions on the respective degree course page.

Several subjects and one of them an NC subject?

In the case of multi-subject degree programs (teaching degree and combined Bachelor's degree), one subject may be admission-free and another subject may be admission-restricted. In the case of the combined Bachelor's degree, for example, the main/major subject may be subject to admission restrictions. An application is then required. No application is required for the minor subject. You simply indicate these subjects when enrolling. You can also find out which combined Bachelor's degree programs have admission restrictions and which minor subjects can be chosen in the degree program description.

  5. 5.UniAccount and Co.

    • I receive a welcome email with important data.

For a successful start to your studies, we will familiarize you with three important terms: Matriculation Number, UniAccount and CampusCard.

      Matriculationnumber
This is your personal identification number. It is printed on your student ID card (=CampusCard) and is required, for example, for exam registrations or certificates.

      UniAccount
The UniAccount is your user ID for the various online services of the university, e.g. the WLAN, and is linked to a university e-mail address. After activation, all communication from the university goes through this e-mail address. Please activate your UniAccount promptly.

      CampusCard
We will send your CampusCard to the address stored in eCampus. It is an important part of your everyday study life at the University of Kassel. It is used as a student ID and semester ticket, as a library card, as an electronic purse for paying in the cafeteria and as a cultural ticket.
